Roero Rosso DOCG: the Smooth Red Wine of Piedmont
Produced from the Nebbiolo grape, Roero Rosso DOCG offers an elegant and deep expression of Piedmontese reds. Unlike other wines of the region, however, it is softer on the palate.
This distinction is due to the territory: Roero’s marine-origin soils are very sandy, a characteristic that imparts interesting aromatic notes and softens the tannins, making the wine pleasantly drinkable.
Roero Rosso DOCG requires a minimum aging of 20 months, increasing to 32 months for the Riserva version.
Characteristics of Roero Rosso DOCG
Elegant ruby red in color, this wine may show garnet reflections in its Riserva version, subject to minimum 36 month of ageing.
To the nose, it offers a rich and multifaceted profile, with harmoniously interwoven aromas of ripe red fruits, dried flowers, sweet spices, balsamic notes and hints of underbrush. Characteristic aromas include rose, cherry, raspberry, thyme and gentian.
On the palate, it is dry, full-bodied and velvety, with smooth tannins and vibrant freshness contributing to its structure. Its aromatic persistence is remarkable, making it an intense and enveloping wine.
To fully appreciate its qualities, it is recommended to serve it in a wide glass that enhances its complex aromas.
Recommended pairings
Its soft and harmonious character makes it perfect for enhancing the saltiness and richness of traditional European cured meats, pairings that celebrate the conviviality and artisanal excellence of the continent’s agri-food heritage.
Roero Rosso DOCG also pairs beautifully with rich and intense dishes such as red meats, mushroom-based recipes and aged cheeses, showing remarkable elegance even after extended bottle aging.
Thanks to its balance of tannins, structure and aromatic complexity, this wine is extremely versatile. It is equally suited for traditional recipes and more modern culinary creations.
